Know a lot about comic books? Me neither, so if you don’t have nearly the background SR does, here’s this week’s rundown. The rundown is an almost weekly summary of the topics we briefly cover in our podcasts. If you want more information Wikipedia it.*
The Big Bang
The Big Bang is a sit-com on CBS that revolves a group of social awkward physicists, hence the name. The show is also filled with a bunch of geek/nerd humor. Listen now to this episode.
Toonami
Toonami was a block of Anime action cartoons that used to be on Cartoon Network. We also mention Midnight Run, another block of Anime shown at a later time on Cartoon Network, around midnight depending on your time zone. On Thursdays Midnight Run became Adult Swim, which also used to be primarily a block of Anime. It eventually became the current Adult Swim, which sucks (Amanda’s opinion) thanks for that Family Guy. Listen to the Toonami episode here.
The Flash
The Flash is a comic book super hero. There are actually three different Flashes, that move through the various generations DC comics has been around. The important Flash for our conversation is Wally West, because he’s the Flash in the comic books we’ve been talking about. Basically, our friend Wally has the ability to move his body at superhuman speeds, as does all the previous Flashes. The Rogues are the name of the bad guys the Flash fights in Keystone City, his hometown.
By the way we were also talking about one of Wally West’s enemies, The Reverse Flash, also known as Zoom. Here’s the cool thing about Zoom, he went to George Mason University, which is the school the cast of Smokingisthenewrecess attends. Listen to more here.
FakeAPStylebook
FakeAPStylebook is a Twitter account Amanda and SR follows on their personal accounts. For those non-communication people the AP (Associated Press) Stylebook is a standard for grammar, spelling and how various topics are discussed in the media. It explains for instance why certain translated words are all spelled the same way in the news. The FakeAPStylebook however makes fun of pop culture by using the AP Stylebook entry format to make witty one liners. Think of it as a modern Devil’s Dictionary. Listen to the rest of this episode here.
Gossip Girl
Gossip Girl follows the fictitious lives of a handful of young adults living on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. Two things are important, first it’s really just another soap opera focusing on the lives of the rich, only the cast is slightly younger. More importantly, Ed Westwick plays Chuck Bass, and he is very very very attractive (Amanda’s opinion).
Within the context of this week’s podcast Jenny, one of the characters on the show, dates someone she assumes is a dog walker, but is in fact part of the same elite class that embodies the rest of the Gossip Girl cast. She was also wrong because as it turns out the dog walker is in fact gay, and dating her stepbrother Eric- oops! For our most recent podcast on Gossip Girl listen here.
*I do now, nor will I ever endorse Wikipedia as an authoritative source, but it seems to be the easiest way for people to get information.
